How Winners Are Chosen

 

The Fary Memorial Scholarship Program will select scholarship recipients from applicants nominated by the four District Committees: Central Committee (Caroline County, Essex County, King and Queen County and King George County), Chesapeake Committee (Gloucester County, Mathews County and Middlesex County), Northern Neck Committee (Lancaster County, Northumberland County, Richmond County and Westmoreland County), and Southern Committee (Charles City County, James City County-Stonehouse Magisterial District, King William County, New Kent County and York County-Bruton Magisterial District). Candidates will be evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Academic achievement based on grade point average, SAT or ACT test scores, class rank and academic honors - minimum requirements are a 3.5 cumulative GPA and combined SAT Critical Reading and Math score of 1100 or ACT Composite score of 24;

2. Communication skills as evidenced in the application essays and possible interviews with the committees;

3. Participation and leadership in school activities and community/public service based on the applicant’s extracurricular involvement, honors and awards;

4. Three Letters of Recommendation must include either (a) two letters from current or former high school academic instructors OR (b) one letter from a high school guidance counselor, high school appointed advisor, or high school principal and one letter from a current or former high school academic instructor. The remaining Letter of Recommendation may be from any other person of the applicant's choice; and

5. Financial circumstances of the applicant's household, if providied by the parent / guardian (optional), and information regarding pending scholarship applications, if any.

The Committee for the District in which an applicant resides will review all qualifying applications and extend to the most qualified applicants invitations to interview at the District level. Personal interviews will be conducted on two levels. If selected to interview, an applicant will be invited to interview with the District Committee. From those interviewed at the District level, as many as three students will be chosen to interview with the Finalist Committee. Applicants should be prepared to discuss their personal goals, academic interests, financial needs, and other possible scholarship opportunities, if any. All applicants will be expected to be available for interviews with the Fary Memorial Scholarship Committees on the scheduled dates. No individual exceptions will be granted.   

Scholarship Renewal

A recipient who maintains good academic standing, demonstrates responsible conduct, and intends to complete college will continue to receive similar funding for each of the remaining three (3) successive years of undergraduate study. Recipients must submit an official college transcript upon completion of each year.
